However, passionflowers aren’t just intended for visuals; research suggests that these plants also possess a variety of medicinal properties that make them potent sedatives, analgesics, antidepressants, anxiolytics and only recently, evidence has emerged of a Passiflora species having cytotoxic potential against different cancer cells.
In a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research, Brazilian [common habitat for Passionflowers, Brazil & Argentina, Zone 7] researchers investigated the cytotoxicity of various Passiflora species using cancers of: colon, ovarian and leukemia cell lines. Of the 14 species of the flower they found that the plant Passiflora alata [red picture above], also known as the winged-stem passionflower, is rich in flavonoids with anti-cancer properties. These compounds proved to be highly cytotoxic to the leukemia cell line HL-60; but not to normal cancer cells, suggesting a selectivity to cancer cells that could prove beneficial in clinical settings. The winged-stem passionflower kills cancer cells but not normal cells. [..snip]
The researchers believe that the cytotoxic activity of ELPA is linked to the presence of the 10 flavonoids they have identified. They also reported that ELPA-treated cells showed signs of apoptosis (programmed cell death) and necrosis (death due to lack of blood supply), with cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase.

It's wonderful to be with the thousands of religious believers for the 68th annual National Prayer Breakfast. I've been here from the first one, where I had the privilege of being asked. I've been with you for a long time before then. And we've made tremendous progress. Tremendous progress. You know what we've done. I don't think anybody has done more than all of us together during these last three years. And it's been my honor.
But this morning, we come together as one nation, blessed to live in freedom and grateful to worship in peace. As everybody knows, my family, our great country, and your President, have been put through a terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people. They have done everything possible to destroy us, and by so doing, very badly hurt our nation. They know what they are doing is wrong, but they put themselves far ahead of our great country.
Weeks ago, and again yesterday, courageous Republican politicians and leaders had the wisdom, the fortitude, and strength to do what everyone knows was right. I don't like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong. Nor do I like people who say, "I pray for you," when they know that that's not so. [..]
I also want to welcome foreign dignitaries from more than 140 countries. That's something. (Applause.) That's something. Everyone here today is united by a shared conviction. We know that our nation is stronger, our future is brighter, and our joy is greater when we turn to God and ask Him to shed His grace on our lives. [..]
In everything we do, we are creating a culture that protects freedom, and that includes religious freedom. (Applause.) As I said on Tuesday in the House Chamber, "In America, we don't punish prayer. We don't tear down crosses. We don't ban symbols of faith. We don't muzzle preachers." We don't muzzle pastors. "In America, we celebrate faith, we cherish religion, we lift our voices in prayer, and we raise our sights to the Glory of God." (Applause.) So much of the greatness we have achieved, the mysteries we've unlocked, and the wonders we've built, the challenges we've met, and the incredible heights that we've reached has come from the faith of our families and the prayers of our people.
Before America declared independence, patriots in all 13 colonies came together in days of fasting and prayer. In the bitter cold of Valley Forge, Washington and his men had no food, no supplies, and very little chance of victory. It reminded me a little bit of 2016. We had very little chance of victory. (Laughter.) Except for the people in this room and some others believed we were going to win. I believed we were going to win. But what they did have was have an unwavering belief that God was with them. I believe that too. God is with the people in this room. [..]
At every stage, our nation's long march for civil rights was inspired, sustained, and uplifted by faith, prayer, and devotion of religious believers. To protect faith communities, I have taken historic action to defend religious liberty, including the constitutional right to pray in public schools. (Applause.)

2-5-20, * -- Many people believe that, if we are truly in a state of “letting go,” we will be able to cease from striving and struggling. However, the Lord Jesus said that we are to “strive” to enter the narrow gate to eternal life (Luke 13:24), not to sit by and wait to die so we can gain heaven. By striving, He means that we should be diligent, active earnestly making every effort to overcome our sinful tendencies, in order to prove that we are truly His children. He said, if you love Me obey My commandments! [John 14:15]
We are also to strive to do the work of the kingdom, whatever form that takes in our lives. This is the reason He gives us spiritual gifts, so that we can edify one another and bring glory to Him. [Romans 12:6-8]
The Christian life is a spiritual battle which the Bible exhorts us to prepare for and wage diligently. “Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12); “Endure hardship . . . like a good soldier of Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:3); “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). Letting go, in the sense of sitting back and watching events unfold however they may, is not biblical.
All the things we are to do, we do by the power of God and not on our own steam. The truth is that working at “letting go” is just as much as an effort-filled work as anything else we tr. [John 15:5] There's a positive reason for struggling—it is good for us; it's God’s plan that helps us grow, mature and gives us strength to endure. Struggles are just one of the ways He strengthens us for the hard things life throws at us. Trials will prove that our faith is worth much more than gold that can be destroyed.
The Bible never tells us to “let go and let God.” There are many commandments about what we are to do that it completely contradicts the way most people interpret “let go and let God.” The popular idea of “letting go” is to adopt a sort of spiritual inertia wherein we do nothing, say nothing, feel nothing and simply live, allowing circumstances to roll over us however they may.
Our successfully enduring trials show that we will be given praise and honor and glory when Jesus Christ returns. My Thoughts Are Not Your Thoughts
The Lord said, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power.” ... “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

12-31-19, John D. Morris, PhD -- Just before Christ ascended into heaven [Acts 1:11], His disciples asked Him, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). Christ refrained from answering their question as they had hoped, but in His wisdom He used the occasion to teach them that some information is for God alone, including the “times and the seasons.” In our finiteness [limit to our knowledge], we are unable to handle too much information; and should we know even a small part of the “knowledge [which] is too wonderful for me” (Psalm 139:6), we would use it improperly.
Isaiah taught the same lesson many years before: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) God has graciously revealed enough that we know He has a wonderful plan, but the details are known by Him alone. They are under His “own power,” or authority. Certainly He knows the future, but more than that, He controls it. And why not? He created time (Genesis 1:1); surely He can exercise authority over it.
Surely the “Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last” (Revelation 22:13) can control the destinies of individuals and nations. “Power” to work out His good pleasure rests solely with “the only wise God our Savior . . . now and ever.” (Jude 1:25)
Although this “power” is His alone, His promise to the disciples that “ye shall receive power" [a different word than that in verse Acts 1:7, here meaning strength]” and has been fulfilled in the person of the Holy Spirit. We have what we need to be “witnesses” of that which we know of Him to “the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8] Source

1-29-20, US Customs Border Protection, SAN DIEGO —U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector and partners have exposed the longest illicit cross-border tunnel ever discovered along the Southwest border. The discovery in late August 2019, Mexican law enforcement identified the tunnel entrance and members of the San Diego Tunnel Task Force (SDTTF). It is concealed by a small industrial building, the tunnel travels north into the U.S. bending slightly west and extending an astonishing 4,068 ft. from the border, with a total length of 4,309 ft at 70 ft depth; over three-quarters of a mile.
