 Nebraska: Facebook Private Personal Messages = NOT PRIVATE - Facebook gave police private data - now 17 yr old being tried as adult 8-10-22, Guardian -- In the wake of the USA supreme court’s upheaval of the abortion law - Roe v Wade, tech workers and privacy advocates expressed concern about how the user data tech companies like Facebook stored their private data and could be used against women seeking abortions. Mark Zuckerberg said the company’s ongoing push to encrypt messaging would help protect people from “bad behavior or over-broad requests for information”. However, according to the Lincoln Journal Star when local Nebraska police came knocking in June 2022 – before Roe v Wade was officially overturned on 6/24/22 – Facebook handed the personal user data of a mother and daughter facing criminal charges for allegedly carrying out an illegal abortion. The private messages between the two women - who were discussing how to obtain abortion pills - were given to police by Facebook. The 17-year-old was more than 20 weeks pregnant and in Nebraska abortions are banned after 20 weeks of pregnancy -t he teenager is now being tried as an adult.
