His penny-pinching, nose-to-the-grindstone advice reached a crescendo in his little pamphlet "Advice to a Young Tradesman, Written by an Old One." [here] Also Thomas Jefferson connected virtue with the independent spirit of yeoman farmers and the open frontier. America's pilgrims tried Socialism - everyone shared everything - results of labor in one community 'pot' = it didn't work because the lazy took advantage and quit working and the industrious quit working because it was unfair. Hard experience had taught the Plymouth colonists the fallacy and error of the ancient Greeks who promised paradise through collectivism rather than individualism. They learned that taking away property to share with the group was found to breed confusion, discontent and retard employment. The realization came that Socialism was incompatible with human nature and the prosperity of humanity. More here
