They Sang: ‘SING HALLELUJAH TO THE LORD’ All night; nine hours 6-26-19, UmNews.org -- A Christian hymn has become the focal point for Hong Kong protesters who gathered for three major demonstrations against a proposed law that would allow extraditions to mainland China. Protesters began to sing the American hymn “Sing Hallelujah to the Lord” and they sang non stop all night for nine hours. The hymn’s impact on defusing tensions was nothing short of miraculous. One Methodist pastor said the song has become the anthem of the whole movement. A Methodist pastor from Hong Kong, talks about recent protests in Hong Kong. He said, “Our congregation has long understood following Jesus to be inseparable from participation in liberation movements in our own community, around the world or during this moment of turmoil on the streets of Hong Kong. For me, it’s a miracle.” He said what happened was a group of pastors organized a 72-hour prayer vigil for the situation in Hong Kong. On the night of June 11, 2019 after prayers, some people started to sing the hymn, which has a simple, repetitive chorus: "'Sing hallelujah to the Lord.' Amazingly, that night they could not stop.
