 The children had been in place for months without food and were so skinny that they showed their ribs. The only food found in the compound was a box of rice and some potatoes. Sheriff Hogrefe described the conditions: "We all gave the children our water and what snacks we had: they were the saddest conditions of life and poverty I have ever seen.
