Religious Persecution in W. VA: Seniors Banned From Bible Study in Personal Apartment Eviction Pending
Mr & Mrs Ken Hauge moved into the Evergreens Senior Living Facility in January 2017. Ken Hauge, a semi-retired Lutheran minister, started a nondenominational Bible study at his fellow residents' request.
8-17-18, In 2017 residents of the EVERGREENS Senior Living Complex [CRC] asked Ken & Liv Hauge, new residents, to lead a Bible study in the complex’s community room. Mr. Hauge reserved the room, but the apartment manager refused to allow him to call the event a “Bible Study,” requiring instead that he call it a “Book Study.”
Resentment and hostility toward all things Christian included when the Evergreens refused to reimburse the resident social committee for an agreed-upon portion of expenses associated with a monthly dinner because a resident briefly said grace over the meal.
On July 23, 2018, the Evergreens adopted a new policy prohibiting residents from engaging in activity “for religious purposes” in the Community Room. The Hauge's [in their mid 80s] received a certified letter also an eviction notice informing that that CRC considers the Bible study in their private apartment to constitute “business activity” prohibited by his lease and, unless he ceased to lead Bible study, his lease would terminate on August 31, 2018.
The Hauge's attorney gave the Evergreens until 10 a.m. on August 30, 2018 to comply with their requests, or face the consequences. "Should you deny the requests or fail to respond to this letter, we are prepared to pursue all available legal remedies, including reporting the matter to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development."
