 10-26-24, The seventeenth USA president was Lincoln's VP Democrat Andrew Johnson (1865-1869). Many historians report he was grossly incompetent and a dictatorial racist; supporters of Johnson are few. He did work to reconstruct the former Confederate States pardoning all who would take an oath of allegiance to the USA, but required leaders and men of wealth to obtain special Presidential pardons. He obstructed political and civil rights for blacks and is principally responsible for the failure of Reconstruction to solve the race problem in the South. In the end, Johnson did more to extend the period of national strife than he did to heal the wounds of war. However, there is evidence he was a Christian as he said: "As for my religion, it is the doctrine of the Bible, as taught and practiced by Jesus Christ." In 1875 with his dying breath he said: “Oh, do not cry. Be good children and we shall meet in heaven.”
