Since 1776 Four USA Presidents Have Been Assassinated8-20-21, Following the third presidential assassination and death of William McKinley in 1901, Congress directed the Secret Service to assume full-time security for all US Presidents. In the course of the history of the United States four Presidents have been assassinated:
1: President Abraham Lincoln was the first to be assassinated only 89 years after the USA became a nation. He was the 16th president. He and his wife were attending the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington DC when John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head; fatally wounding the President who died the next morning. #2: President James Garfield on July 2, 1881 was shot in the back while standing on the platform of a Washington D.C. train station. He lingered more than two months before dying on September 19, 1881. #3: President William McKinley was greeting visitors at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. in September 1901 when he was shot twice in the abdomen at point-blank range; he lived another eight days - date of his death is September 14, 1901. #4: President John F. Kennedy was shot from a long range rifle as he was riding in a convertible car with the top down. Onlookers lined the streets as they passed in the trip from the Dallas, Texas airport. The President was struck once in the neck and once in the back of the head, killing him instantly as he sat beside his wife Jackie.
