Not only were Hampton and Raymond Caughman born in the same So Carolina house, their mother gave birth to all ten of her children as well as another set of twins
7-12-18, LEXINGTON, SC -- A set of 91-year-old twins, Hampton & Raymond Caughman were born and raised in the Midlands, So Carolina and have spent nearly everyday of their lives together - including while serving in World War II. Raymond said,
"We were close. We lived together and even slept together in the same bed for many, many years."
They were drafted in 1945 and deployed to Shanghai during World War II, both worked in the Signal Center transcoding messages in Morse Code. Hampton says this was comforting because "at least we were together. We knew where each one was, wasn't concerned about him, you know? Got three promotions and got all them at the same time. Came home together, same time."
After returning home, Raymond started the Lexington State Bank just a few blocks from Hampton's business, The Red and White Grocery Store, on Columbia Avenue in Lexington. Hampton says he was the first business owner, white business owner in Lexington, to hire a black employee.
If working on the same street wasn't close enough, the two eventually built homes right across the street from one another and just feet away from their childhood home. More here
