Flee the Lust of the Flesh – Look at Samson! |
Judges 13:25; Proverbs 8:13; 1 Cor. 9:27 1 Corinthians 9:27 10-6-21, Almighty God hates sin … in the Old Testament and the New. Although He is loving and provided for our salvation; He is also jealous and Holy. One of mankind’s sins is against his/her own body [1 Corinthians 6:18]; lust of the flesh [sexual pleasures outside the bonds of marriage of a man and woman - it's the same with heterosexual and homosexual people. [Ephesians 5:1-14] Sadly, in modern America, the culture accepts and promotes lust of the flesh. [Romans 12:1-2] The Bible records facts of the historical person, Samson; he is the classic picture of one who, through the lusts of his flesh, turned from being a man of valor and became a friend and slave of the world [James 4:4]. As a young man he disobeyed his parents [Judges 14:1–4] and seven times lusted after many women [Judges 14:1-3, 7; 15:1-2; 16:1]. Deceitful Delilah was the woman to finally bring him to shame. [Judges 16:4-5] | Samson’s enemies wanted to know his strength; and four times Delilah lied to him. He finally succumbed to her ‘charms’ telling her the source was his hair. She betrayed him for money; cut his hair then called the Philistines who swooped in, gouged out his eyes and made him a disgusting spectacle as a chained laborer grinding grain. [Judges 16:21] Ultimately, he repented, turned to God and God made him strong again. Samson prayed that he could defeat his enemies and God answered his prayer. The Philistines took Samson, chained him to the two main pillars supporting the roof of their temple to make folly of him … but Samson prayed: “O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee and strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” [Judges 16:28] His prayer was answered; he pushed on the pillars and the entire building collapsed killing all - including himself. He died in vengeance and brought glory to God. He was the greatest champion of all Israel, yet a lustful man of sin. He repented and is listed among the faithful. [Judges 16:25-30; Hebrews 11:32] |
