10-7-22, Matthew Henry expounds on the error proclaimed by the Prophet Isaiah of consuming strong drink and wine. The prophet says happy are those who glory in the Lord; hence His people get wisdom and strength for every service and every conflict. Instruction in the things of God, is needful and the same precept should be often repeated to us, that we may better understand them. Wine is a mocker and those who don’t understand scorn and despise are [or will be] justly punished. If we are at peace with God, we have, in effect, made a covenant with death; whenever it comes, it cannot do us any real damage if we are Christ's and as the Apostle Paul said, "Better to be absent from the body and home with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8 We think of making death our friend, while by sin we make God our enemy, it is absurd.
