7-31-22, In book of Leviticus, Moses instructed people on what God requires for forgiveness of sin; theme is holiness and atonement by substitution of animals. As the Israelites were held captive as slaves in Egypt for 400 years, the concept of God had been distorted by the polytheistic, pagan Egyptians. God provides instruction and laws to guide a sinful people in their relationship with a holy God. Sin must be atoned for through the offering of proper sacrifices and the shedding of blood (Lev 8:1 thru 10:20). Other topics covered are diet, childbirth and diseases which are carefully regulated. Chapter 16:1 describes the Day of Atonement when an annual sacrifice is made. Personal, moral and social living dictates are proclaimed in contrast to the then current practices of the heathen. Lev 17:1, 22:33 Clearly we understand and appreciate that the Lord Jesus is our substitute for the forgiveness of OUR sin. Hebrews 9:22; 2 Corinthians 5:21
