Intl Space Station [ISS] Japanese Astronaut Norishige Kanai Worried He's Grown 3.5 inches in only three weeks - I may not fit in my seat!
1-9-18, BBC -- The absence of gravity allows the spine vertebrae to spread apart causing the growth spurt. Astronaut Norishige Kanai first trip to space and in only three weeks he's grown taller by 3.5 inches!
Kanai tweeted: "Good morning, everybody, I have a major announcement today. We had our bodies measured after reaching space, and wow, wow, wow, I actually have grown 9 cm [3.5 inches]! I grew like some plant in just three weeks. Nothing like this since high school. I'm a bit worried whether I'll fit in the Soyuz seat when I go back."
Nine centimeters [3.5 inches] is a lot, every human body is different; you do get taller in space as your spine drifts apart, usually by about two to five centimeters. The Russian Soyuz spacecraft takes the astronauts from and to Earth and has a limit on seating height. If crew members become too tall, it could pose a problem.
