Most of Nation's Soccer Team and Passengers Totalling 71 Killed in Plane Crash - Pilot Error Not Enough Fuel to Complete Trip
11-29-16, Guardian -- Brazil mourns victims from Chapecoense soccer team; president Michel Temer declared three days of national mourning plane crash, killed 71 people.
Bolivian authorities have suspended the license of charter LaMia airline whose flt 2933 crashed in Colombia this week after apparently running out of fuel. Six of the 77 people on the plane – three footballers, two crew and a journalist – survived.
Medellin air traffic controllers asked LaMia2933 to wait while another flight made an emergency landing. [Details on the length of the wait and problems with the other flight were not immediately available.] Air traffic controller Ms Yaneth Molina, who received the distress call from 2933, said in a letter written to colleagues that she had received death threats following the crash.
Family members say the pilot, Miguel Quiroga is responsible and his father-in-law asked for forgiveness; the flight plan revealed there was not adequate fuel for journey. Pilot Quiroga should never have been allowed to set off with a flight plan as flawed as the one the company presented. There were no plans to refuel, nor did the plane have enough range to reach an alternative airport or keep flying beyond expected flight time as is standard safety procedure.
