NY clergy sex abuse may be sweeping but legal cases few
9-7-18, The New York proposal, called the Child Victims Act, has passed the Democratic-majority state Assembly, and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo supports the idea. But it has been blocked from a vote by Republicans arguing more than the Catholic Church should be targeted and Democrats were grand-standing ... Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, said that while the investigation may fuel calls to allow lawsuits over decades-old claims, the archdiocese established its own, private compensation program “because it was the right thing to do.” The 278 people who have received a total of nearly $59.8 million through the program waived their right to sue, though they are free to speak about their experiences if they choose.
How to Punish the Catholic Church for Child Abuse
8-16-18, Fortune -- Why the U.S. Roman Catholic Church hasn't been sued under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, for its systemic cover up of child sex abuse on such a large scale? The answer is that, as currently written, the law does not apply to this situation, because the “predicate act” needed to bring a federal RICO claim cannot be a personal injury like sex abuse. It’s time for the U.S. to get real about the dangers within the Roman Catholic Church.

Catholic Church Continues to Lobby Against Child Protection Law Reforms
Amy Hill, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, the bishops’ political arm in the state said: “Statutes of limitations exist to ensure a just verdict can be reached. Over time witnesses’ memories fade, evidence is lost or never found, and in many instances perpetrators or witnesses may be deceased.”
9-10-15, Susan Matthews, Catholic -- "Hill’s argument doesn’t hold water because there is no Statute of Limitations for murder in Pennsylvania. All the evidence challenges she mentions would also apply to murder trials. There should not be a Statute of Limitations on Child Sex Abuse. This is just a case of the Church trying to avoid fiscal and moral responsibility.
