8-27-19, NatlReview -- the New York Times’ "1619 Project," is a series of essays attempting to report on slavery in America. Some of the essays deliver the goods, offering perspectives that are genuinely new and provocative. [..snip] Conservatives have not been caught dumbfounded with our mouths agape at the truths of the journey of black Americans from enslavement to emancipation. We merely stand against the revisionists in emphasizing a fundamental conflict, rather than congruence, between the Revolutionary generation’s work in our founding charter and ideals and the reality of slavery. This is reflected in some political hypocrisy regarding slavery. Many object to the project’s reliance on a distorting school of anti-capitalist history. If the aim is to tell the history of our country “truthfully,” we have to include everyone and everything and seek the right proportion. The '1619 Project' fails when it only delivers mere generalities and convenient omissions.
