United States: Democracy or Republic?
9-13-18, Natl Review, Jay Cost -- "The United States is a republic, not a democracy" this is an oft-repeated expression. The word “republic” — deriving from the Latin phrase res publica, or “the people’s concern.” The authors of the Constitution were radically republican, at least for their age, believing that the only legitimate form of government was one in which public authority derived entirely from the people [if that were true there'd be no legalized killing of unborn children in America as the majority of the PEOPLE thinks it's an abomination!] [..snip] The separation of powers only slows the deliberations of public councils and the Senate gives the small states the ability only to halt the initiatives of the large states. Is this not a price worth paying to stop factious, narrow-minded, or hasty majorities from running roughshod over the rights of their neighbors or the good of the whole [that's one important reason for the Electoral College - protecting the votes of the 'flyover states!']?
