Concern: EMP Blast Above the USA

Is there anything WE can do to prepare for the very low expectation of an EMP attack? 

8-18-17, I just put my extra laptop computer in a Faraday Cage [nesting box]. I have 100s of ebooks on it and also have a generator & solar battery to power it. Of course there is the possibility THEY could be fried from the EMP ... oh well, do whatcha can! I have now learned there is an easier way ... see below.

A little background:
An Electromagnetic Pulse is potential form of warfare ... an enemy of the USA could / may explode a nuke above the country knocking out all power for hundreds of miles depending on the elevation of the explosion; see map:

The technology and history of this technology is not new. The US military has dabbled in in for decades.*

While the ability of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to inflict catastrophic damage on U.S. infrastructure has been a known fact for decades, insufficient efforts have been taken to mitigate the threat. A survey of congressional, federal, state, local, and international measures to deal with the threat reveals more complacency than action.

In 2008, under the Natl Defense Authorization Act for FY 2008, the Dept of Homeland Security was required “to coordinate efforts with the [EMP] Commission for work related to EMP attack on electricity infrastructure, and protect the USA against it.”...  In August 2010 Michael Frankel, who served as executive director of the EMP Commission said that from 2001 to 2009 the commission testified that their mandate has simply languished.

A high-altitude EMP could create malfunctions of electronic control equipment over thousands of kilometers. There is not sufficient protection from such a widespread, simultaneous impact.

* Starfish Prime was a July 9, 1962 high-altitude nuclear test conducted by the USA, jointly with the Atomic Energy Commission. It was the largest nuclear test conducted in outer space and one of five conducted by the US in space. [It damaged electrical equipment and power outages in Hawaii.] More here, here and here
