Who Is Karen Handel, Winner of the Georgia Special Election?
6-21-17, New York Times · ATLANTA — Karen Handel, a fixture in Georgia Republican politics, easily won in Tuesday’s runoff to fill the House seat.
Karen Handel is a Georgia Republican politician and businesswoman; served as the 26th Secretary of State of Georgia. In 2003 she first chaired the Fulton County Board of Commissioners until 2006 and then was elected as Georgia's Secretary of State from 2007 to 2010. In 2011 was appointed Senior Vice President of public policy at Susan G. Komen for the Cure [breast cancer charity]. On February 7, 2012 she left Komen following her objection to the foundation's decision to fund Planned Parenthood. In 2014 she unsuccessfully ran for Georgia's US Senate seat.
