Three of the declaration's points involve prosecuting current Egyptian officials. Some Islamists denounced the document as a "farce" because it does not recognize the Islamic nature of Egypt. The declaration had more to do with persuading American policymakers to support the Muslim Brotherhood against the Egyptian government, Meunier said.
