Reporting on the collapse of Florida International University’s (FIU) massive new pedestrian bridge, Miami-Dade Police Chief Juan Perez said 8 people have been taken to the hospital and eight vehicles are stuck under the bridge and the number of dead is undetermined. “At this point, we can’t even tell how many cars are under there. We won’t have a count on bodies for a while. It’s bad. It’s really bad. The cars were stopped at a signal light; there were no warning signs. It looks like it just came down.” Earlier this month FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg statement said that the 174-foot, 950-ton section of the bridge was built to the side of where it was eventually rotated over eight lanes of the highway, according to a press release announcing the installation of the bridge and was an engineering feat. "It will be the largest pedestrian bridge move via a Self-Propelled Modular Transportation (SPMT) in U.S. history. FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully. The bridge was designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and have a design life that would exceed 100 years.
