What Went Wrong in Hawaii?

1-15-18, During the many nuclear tests performed by NoKo in the past many years, no direct military response was necessary as  they posed no threat to the United States. If they did, missiles on ships in the Pacific, or other land-based missiles would be launched to shoot them down.

The Saturday, Jan 13, 2018, false alarm warning people that a missile was heading for Hawaii has many wondering exactly what caused it. Hawaiians and tourists rushed to areas with some physical protection. Some guests at hotels across the Hawaiian Islands were instructed to go to hotel basements after the false alert was sent out. Some people made tearful goodbye calls and a family even had taken shelter in the sewers. The scare left Americans wondering what went wrong and how it's supposed to work?

1. The US military is in charge of detecting missile launches maintaining a complex and integrated network of sensors and detection capabilities in the Pacific to follow missile activity – missile launches are immediately detected by satellites of any infrared signature on a launchpad.
2. The detection triggers an instant Strategic Command, or STRATCOM, assessment process when the location of the launch is learned.
3. The potential type of missile, trajectory, apogee, distance and potential targets in the path of the missile is assessed.
4. Top military commanders join a conference call with their top priority whether the missile is a threat to the US or its allies. NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command), STRATCOM, intelligence agencies and the National Security Council are involved.
5. The president is brought in and response decisions are made.

 
The Hawaii false alarm went out to cell phones, television and radio of impending missile attack. Hawaii Gov. David Ige said, "It was a mistake made during a standard procedure at the changeover of a shift and an employee pushed the wrong button.”

[Oh Ms Gabbard, why has there been no peace with NoKo for decades? NoKo has been launching missiles all during Obama’s reign and nothing was done on May 2009, Feb 2013, Jan 2016 & Sept 2016 – no hysteria and outcry that it was Barry’s fault. How about Bill Clinton’s claim that if NoKo had nukes the world would be safe?]

On Sunday, 1/14/18, Vern Miyagi, the Hawaii Emergency Management Administrator said the officer responsible for the alert mistakenly selected the wrong computer template during a drill run at shift change. The drill was supposed to involve only those in the agency, but the selected template, which showed the message that was going to be sent out, was prepared to send the message to the public. The computer asked the officer to confirm it was the message that was supposed to be sent - he/she clicked "yes," the message made its way to the entire state. [the mistake was clicked TWICE!] Miyagi further stated: "Pacific Command would take about five minutes to characterize a launch, where the missile is going, which means the population would have about 15 minutes to take shelter. It's not much time at all. But it is enough time to give you a chance to survive."
