 25 Year Old No Korean Soldier Shot While Escaping: So Korean Surgeons Repair Damage to Intestines Finding Ten Inch Parasites; He is Recovering Asking for Food & Watching TV11-13-17, NY Post -- A North Korean soldier bolted from a guard post at the northern side of Panmunjom to the southern side of the village and was shot by his comrades in No Korea. He was taken to hospital in So Korea where surgery was done to repair damage to his intestines. While treating the wounds, surgeons removed dozens of parasites from the soldier’s ruptured small intestine, including presumed roundworms that were as long as 10.6 inches, which may reflect poor nutrition and health in North Korea’s military. The soldier is 5 feet, 7 inches tall but weighs just 132 pounds. He is now breathing on his own watching TV. Panmunjom, located inside the 2.5-mile-wide Demilitarized Zone that separates the two Koreas, is where an armistice was signed to pause the 1950-53 Korean War; North Korea and China on one side and the American-led UN Command on the other. The DMZ is guarded on both sides by hundreds of thousands of combat-ready troops, razor-wire fences, tank traps and more than a million mines are believed to be buried inside the zone.
