If the United States Military is Working on the Taxpayer 'Dime' to Fix a Private California Airport, They Sure Can Build a Security Wall on the Nation's Southern Border1-25-19, About 100 Marines and sailors began working on California's Catalina island's private Catalina's Airport in the Sky this month under an agreement with the I Marine Expeditionary Force at California's Camp Pendleton and the Catalina Island Conservancy. It is partially being paid for by $5 million privately donated to the nonprofit land trust group. However, the group isn't paying for the Marines and sailors; they are still on tax payers payroll, which the military considers valuable training. ... The airport is scheduled to reopen April 2020.
