NASA & Europe Launching 'Probes' to Collide With An Asteroid Attempting to Change Its Orbit and/or examine interior of rock

2-4-19, The Baltimore Sun -- The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) program's design was done by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory; the goal is to use a refrigerator-sized object to smash into and deflect an asteroid from Earth. A little 'nudge' early enough to alter an object’s orbit and cause it to miss an impact with Earth is the plan. The DART Test plan to avert catastrophe and NASA’s first mission not just to explore space, but to defend against it. [What could possibly go wrong?]

​March 25, 2013, Miriam Kramer Space.com -- In 2022 scientists in Europe and the United States are moving forward with plans to intentionally smash a spacecraft into the 2500 foot diameter 'Didymos' asteroid to see inside the space rock. The European-led Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission [AIDA], is slated to launch in 2019 to send two spacecraft — one built by scientists in the U.S, and the other by the European Space Agency — on a three-year voyage to the asteroid Didymos and its companion, 'Didymos.' The asteroids were discovered in 1996 and at present orbit have no chance of impacting the Earth making them a great target for this kind of mission.

Earth's Mission to a Binary Asteroid, for Defense / Hera Mission ...
6-25-18, Humankind's first mission to a binary [made of two things or parts] asteroid system 'Didymos' is named for the Greek goddess of marriage. [Interesting it's also the name of 'Doubting Thomas:' John 11:16, 20:24-25, 21:2]. Hera would fly to the 2600 foot diameter mountain-sized main body 'Didymos' that is orbited by a 500 ft diameter 'moon,' informally called ‘Didymoon.’

4-3-15, The European Space Agency plans to launch its 'Asteroid Impact Mission' [AIM] probe. It'll travel over the course of a year or so, Aorbit Didymoon, mapping its surface and collecting data on its mass and overall structure. Current plans also call for it to send out a pair of smaller satellites to collect more data, as well as a lander that would touch down on Didymoon itself — becoming just the fourth craft (if Japan's current Hayabusa-2 mission is a success) to make a controlled landing on an asteroid.
