In 2017 President Trump Stunned NATO leaders telling them they need to pay up
May 25, 2017, NYPost · President Trump, who during the presidential campaign called NATO “obsolete,” urged the countries to pay their own way by increasing their defense spending to 2 percent of their gross domestic product, saying it “is not fair to the taxpayers of the United States.” See video here
NATO Sec Gen Jens Stoltenberg announced Friday, 11-29-19, that Canada and NATO’s European members have upped defense spending since 2016, when Donald Trump was elected. Since 2006, each NATO member is supposed to spend 2 percent of their nation's GDP on defense. Yet only the United States and two other members hit that mark in 2014. Now eight European countries are on track to meet it this year: Britain, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Stoltenberg reported that a majority of NATO’s 29 members now plan to hit the 2 percent threshold by 2024. Germany, the most flagrant laggard, will spend just 1.35 percent on defense this year, with “plans” to hit 2 percent around 2031.
12-3-19, NYPost -- For all the complaints that the president has been alienating America’s allies, it sure looks like he has strengthened the most important US alliance.
