New York Harbor: |
t4-7-24, DailyMail, here – Around 8:30 pm, Saturday, 4-6-24 the 89,000 ton cargo ship, the “APL Qingdao,” registered to Malta lost power near New York City's Verrazzano Bridge in New York Harbor. It went dark as it crossed the Kill Van Kull waterway, a narrow shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey. The Qingdao floated alarmingly close to the bridge. The 1,100 foot-long ship was 'just north' of the bridge that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island. After the power failure was observed by US Coast Guard, three tug boats rushed to its aid and brought the ship under control; the vessel regained propulsion and was assisted to Stapleton Anchorage by tugs. | The ship is owned by a French logistics company and it was headed to Charleston, So Carolina. Although the incident on Saturday did not result in damage, the image of the ship lurking near the bridge brought memories of the recent 3-26-24 Dali ship/bridge calamity in Baltimore when it also apparently lost power crashing into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the death of six men and the structure to collapse. One major difference between Baltimore and New York is the US Coast Guard operates Vessel Traffic Service [VTS] in NY similar to air traffic control monitoring all ships that tugs can respond to quickly. Baltimore did not have VTS service. |
