5-18-20, ABCNews -- The touted "game changer" treatment for COVID-19 virus drug, hydroxychloroquine, hasn't been approved by the FDA for use against the virus.
However, President Donald Trump told reporters he's been taking a pill a day for about a week after he asked the White House doctor if he could take it despite having no symptoms. He said: "I'm still fine," no side effects.

Hydroxychloroquine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1955. It's sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used to prevent and treat malaria in areas where malaria remains sensitive to chloroquine. Also for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus & porphyria cutanea tarda. It's taken by mouth & being studied as a treatment for COVID-19). It's on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system.
This medication is also used to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis). It belongs to a class of medications known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). It can reduce skin problems in lupus and prevent swelling/pain in arthritis.
