Adult Brain Does Grow New Neurons After All: Scientific American

3-25-19, For decades, scientists have debated whether the birth of new neurons—called neurogenesis—was possible in an area of the brain that is responsible for learning, memory and mood regulation. Now, a new study in Nature Medicine journal — says “yes.”

In light of the new study, Jonas Frisén, a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden said: “I would say that there is an overwhelming case for the neurogenesis throughout life in humans.”  Rusty Gage, president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and a neuroscientist and professor there, says he was impressed by the researchers’ attention to detail. “Methodologically, it sets the bar for future studies,” says Gage, who was not involved in the new research but was the senior author in 1998 of a paper that found the first evidence for neurogenesis. [Note: Personal testimony of my husband, John who had had many strokes caused by bleeders in his brain. His doctor showed me his brain scan image on a monitor revealing that one third of his brain was dead/blackened. He was able to regain normal speech as his brain cells grew back. No follow-up professional tests were done, however just actual behaviors showing that his cognitive disability healed.-- Annette]

February 28, 2018, Lung tissue regenerates after acute injury. Researchers have identified a lung stem cell that repairs the organ's gas exchange compartment. They isolated and characterized these progenitor cells from mouse and human lungs and demonstrated they are essential to repairing lung tissue damaged by severe influenza and other respiratory ailments.
