Often Confused with the 1938 Folk Christian Hymn By Louis Armstrong "When the Saints GO Marchin' In' 3-7-17, As we watch & pray for the soon coming of our 'Blessed Hope' the Lord Jesus in power and glory - I was just reading another report about the phenomenal events coming up in September where THIS song is mentioned. I never knew it was a Christian HYMN! The lyrics of BOTH songs are inspiring and Biblical. Enjoy! Although the titles only differ by one word ... the 1896 song 'When the Saints ARE Marching In' [Lyrics by Katharine E. Purvis & Music by James M. Black] is NOT the traditional 1938 Louis Armstrong's 'When the Saints GO Marching In.'  Many song collections in a variety of formats; book, record, tape and CD — incorrectly assign Katharine E. Purvis and James M. Black the credit for the 1938 American folk favorite. In her 1957 master's thesis at Penn State University, the music professor Mary Landon Russell confused the two songs. The precise origins of "When the Saints GO Marching In" unknown. It's probably not possible to trace the original source of this error, or to correct it from spreading. The earliest authoritative reference book with the error appears to be The Great Song Thesaurus by Roger Lax and Frederick Smith, published by Oxford University Press. On page 380 of the 1984 first edition, the authors incorrectly attribute 'When the Saints GO Marching In' to Katharine E. Purvis and James M. Black that was written in 1896 with the 1938 version.
