Arizona USA: John Sims, Rural/Metro Fire Dept Captain Hit the Jackpot Digging Up a 1961 Bomb Shelter Buried in His Backyard
1-27-19, InspireMore.com -- John Sims a Fire Dept Captain in Tucson Arizona got an unexpected bonus when he purchased his home in 2015. There's a 1961 era Cold War-era bomb shelter buried in his backyard! Did it collapse after all these years? John wanted to know and hired a consultant who used metal detectors to determine the spot where he should start digging.
He dug about three feet before hitting the jackpot: the metal cap covering the entrance. He fully understood the dangers posed by confined spaces, especially ones that haven’t disturbed in over half a century, mold and unhealthy air. He waited a day before descending the spiral stairs and found himself inside a fiberglass dome shelter filled with rubble.
He had people standing by in case it collapsed or the lid slammed shut or something. He said,
“I was really hoping it was going to be a little microcosm … a time capsule full of civil-defense boxes, radiation detectors and cots and stuff like that; hoping it wasn't a septic tank!” It was just filled with debris and rubble.
He cleaned out the rubble - and so far - he's repaired the entrance and spiral staircase and outfitted it with genuine artifacts he found at a local high school’s fallout shelter; and intends to enjoy the cool year round 72 degrees retreat when the temps in Tucson hit triple digits. More here
