There have also been 20 cases in Pasadena, far more than the five typically seen annually. One diagnosis ... the patient was homeless, a clue to doctors that he might have typhus. Typhus is commonly associated with poor hygiene, overcrowding and flea feces. ... In 2015 California's last outbreak, a single opossum captured in a mobile home park in Pomona had 1,087 fleas on it. Of the tested fleas three-fifths from the cats and opossums that were trapped were positive for typhus. The answer is not just to shake typhus fleas from wildlife, but shake the poor hygiene habits we may have. Of the 945 typhus cases in California since 2001, 726 have been in Los Angeles County. California Typhus Outbreak Continues to Grow - webmd.com The typhus involved in the L.A. outbreak is known as murine typhus and can spread to people from infected feces of fleas that has bacteria called Rickettsia typhi. The CDC says most people will recover without treatment, but some cases may be severe. If left untreated, severe cases can lead to damage in the liver, kidneys, lungs, and brain. The treatment is a 7- to 10-day course of antibiotics, usually doxycycline.
