Jury finds reporter, Rolling Stone responsible for defaming U-Va. dean with gang rape story
11-4-16, Washington Post - CHARLOTTESVILLE VA — A federal court jury decided Friday that a Rolling Stone journalist defamed a former University of Virginia associate Nicole Eramo [pictured]. The jurors reached a verdict Friday after deliberating across three days. Ms Eramo asked for $7.5 million... the verdict showed the jury’s willingness to slam a major media outlet for the impacts of getting a story wrong.
Originally the magazine was hailed as a brave triumph of reporting for its raw accounts of rape and attempts at bringing accountability to a storied public university, the article led to protests of the U-Va. administration, vandalism of a campus fraternity, and outrage among sexual assault prevention activists.
This isn't the first time a woman has lied about rape. Remember in 2006 the Duke LaCrosse team that was ruined because of a false accuser who cried rape and ruins the lives of innocent men?
Back story: November 19, 2014: Rolling Stone publishes “A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA” Rolling Stone contributing editor Sabrina Rubin Erdely begins her piece on the UVA’s ineffective handling of rape cases by introducing Jackie, a woman who claimed to be gang-raped in a UVA frat house on September 28, 2012.
In 2012, the national president of Phi Kappa Psi, the fraternity whose University of Virginia chapter members were falsely accused of gang-rape by a student named Jackie, perhaps precipitated an epidemic of reports of sexual assaults on campus' across the USA. How many of those are false as well?
