January 2017: US Army Approves Servicemen To Wear Turbans & Beards, Females May Wear Hijab [Head Scarves] Goal to Make the Force Inclusive of Minority Religions
4-26-18, Early in 2017 at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri the Army authorized beards for religious soldiers. The move was a response to years of requests — and a lawsuit — from Sikh soldiers seeking to both serve and adhere to the tenets of their faith.
According to an undated memo, the directive technically applied to all religions; including Norse pagans. Col Curtis Schroeder granted an unnamed soldier to wear a beard subject to standards and limitations. He said: “In observance of your Heathen; Norse Pagan faith, you may wear a beard, in accordance with Army uniform and grooming standards for soldiers with approved religious accommodations.” More here and here
