In the United States There Are Sixty Five Volcanoes Scientists Consider Active
Yellowstone Super Volcano in Wyoming Volcanic Caldera
5-24-18, Of the sixty-five volcanoes in the USA, there are twelve on heightened alert being watched for eruptive activity. Especially Wyoming's Yellowstone Volcano. It is unique as it's the site of multiple calderas and not a mountain. These basin-shaped features usually form when a large volume of magma is removed from beneath a volcano, causing the ground to collapse into the emptied space and form huge depressions.
In Hawaiian "Kilauea" means "spewing" or "much spreading." Kilauea has been continually erupting since January 3, 1983. The horrific eruption now ongoing since early May 2018 is being described as worst in a hundred years.
To this date, the most economically disruptive eruption happened in 1980... Mount St. Helens. Fifty-seven people were killed as well as thousands of birds and mammals. The explosive eruption created a volcanic ash cloud that drifted east across the U.S. in three days and circled Earth over the course of 15 days. Having caused an estimated $1 billion in damage, the Mount St. Helens eruption was the most economically destructive volcanic event in US history.
